WHAT THE FOLK
BUTTERFLY RECORDINGS
Some critics have been complaining it’s been a rubbish year for music. But you’ve just got to know where to look. The best stuff at the moment is on the margins – with folk (or should that be Nu-Folk?) being especially strong. Among this year’s highlights were the debuts of Samantha Marais, Thee Stranded Hourse and Nancy Elizabeth, but I’m opting for the superb compilation album from Simon Tong’s inspired new folk label Butterfly. The tracks by Lisa Knapp and Green Peppers (an Isobel Campbell side project), especially, are glorious.
